چکیده

Adaptive DNS/LES is used to compute the drag coefficient cD for the flow past a sphere at Reynolds number Re = 10. Using less than 10 mesh points, cD is computed to an accuracy of a few percent corresponding to experimental precision, which is at least an order of magnitude cheaper than standard non-adaptive Large Eddy Simulation LES computations in the literature. Adaptive DNS/LES is a General Galerkin G2 method for turbulent flow, where a stabilized Galerkin finite element method is used to compute approximate solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations, with the mesh being adaptively refined until a stopping criterion is reached with respect to the error in a chosen output of interest, in this paper cD. Both the stopping criterion and the mesh refinement strategy are based on a posteriori error estimates, in the form of a space-time integral of residuals times derivatives of the solution of an associated dual problem, linearized at the approximate solution, and with data coupling to the output of interest. There is no filtering of the equations, and thus no Reynolds stresses are introduced which need modelling. The stabilization in the numerical method is acting as a simple turbulence model.

Three Dimensional Analysis of Flow Past a Solid-Sphere at Low Reynolds Numbers with the Aid of Body Fitted Coordinates

In this paper, the flow-field of an incompressible viscous flow past a solid-sphere at low Reynolds numbers (up to 270) is investigated numerically. In order to extend the capabilities of the finite volume method, the boundary (body) fitted coordinates (BFC) method is used. Transformation of the partial differential equations to algebraic relations is based on the finite-volume method with coll...

The Development of Maximum Likelihood Estimation Approaches for Adaptive Estimation of Free Speed and Critical Density in Vehicle Freeways

The performance of many traffic control strategies depends on how much the traffic flow models have been accurately calibrated. Numerical Simulation of Flow Past Oscillating Airfoil Using Oscillation of Flow Boundary Condition

The present study is devoted to an approximate modeling for numerical simulation of flows past oscillating airfoils. In this study, it is shown that the harmonic oscillating objects can be studied by simple numerical codes that are not able to solve moving grids. Instead of using moving grid for the simulation of flowfield around an oscillating airfoil, this unsteady flow is solved on a fixed g...
